My winning art piece for the Studio2880 and Prince George Library Teen Art Showcase. A sculptural collage and commentary on the relationship between people and the environment.

Pond-er

"Most Original"

In 2024, I was honoured to have won the category “Most Original.” Winning this category was such a flattering and encouraging compliment to my art, medium, and skill. That award marked the bitter-sweet end of four years entering the annual showcase/competition.

Artist statement

This project is made entirely of clay that would’ve had to be recycled. I used the scraps of clay from my family's other projects that were too small to be useful  – the discards, before they dried out and had to go through the typically laborious reclaim process. This practice saves our business a lot of time and effort, and helps us be more environmentally conscious by reducing the amount of electricity and water required to save used clay.

Look at this piece – all its parts, crevices, and details. Lean in. Notice your perspective change. Literally see yourself in it. Feel like part of the pond. Take a minute to find everything hidden. Later, when you go outside and walk on the snow, take this feeling with you. Think about the footprint you leave in the environment around you. When you visit a park, or a lake, or a pond, be mindful of and admire what is just beneath your feet. ‘Cause this is just a closer look.
